Nook Dragon ScreenSaver

  • Jan. 8th, 2010 at 12:25 AM
I recently got my hands on a Nook ebook reader and I absolutely love it. I'm a book nut, and with 3 floor to ceiling shelves going on 4 just packed with reading material, it was getting a bit ridiculous. The ereader is really easy on the eyes with the eink technology, and it's so great having dozens of books in one tiny package!

The Nook does have 3 default screensavers that you can use, but I made one of my own with a matching set of dragons that I formatted for just this purpose. If you have a Nook and want a bunch of dragons cycling every time it goes to sleep, feel free to download it.

I hope that 2010 is going well for everyone!

Teaching English in a foreign country?

  • Jan. 7th, 2010 at 9:32 PM
I'll have to see what I think about this in a few days.. but right now I'm highly considering going to Asia to teach english and hopefully keep freelancing via the web on the side.

Japan is my first choice. But Korea sounds a little hrm.. friendlier? Looser? Having no experience or particular knack for teaching does worry me. But I don't want to invest in a TEFL/TESL/TESOL/etc course just yet. If I can get a one year position with no experience and just a BA in anything, that would be pretty ideal to test things out I think. I might even take the plunge and head to China.

I'm obviously still in a very preliminary stage of research, but does anyone have any advise?

I do have experience in spending time in a foreign country, 2 months in Taiwan, but then I am with relatives so it's not that much of a same. Still don't think culture shock will be quite as bad for me.

Рождество Твоё, Христе Боже, славим, а так же Адесте фиделес Кристум адоратум.

У меня всё очень, очень охуенно.
Надеюсь, и у вас тоже.

Home Again, with Additional Dog pictures.

I'm home.

This is the weather the dog likes: crisp, cold, weather that puts him in mind of wolfish ancestors hunting on the steppes.

Me, I put on long underwear and dozens of layers over that, and top it off with the sheepskin Uigur hat I haggled for in Xinjiang, and trudge in the snow behind him. It's frozen on top, so you crunch and rock and hunt for ruts that already exist as you walk, or you teeter-totter across the surface, half-falling at every second step. While Cabal is happy in a world filled with sharp smells and frozen rivers, and he bounces over the ice and snow with joy.

Many years ago I discovered (via the currently hiatus-bound Fabulist) Jason Webley. I posted this a link to this song, Eleven Saints, a song Jason Webley wrote and performed with Jay Thompson...

Jason was pleased, and wrote to me to say thanks, and then, a couple of years ago, introduced me in email to his friend Amanda Palmer, with whom he was working on a project, as they worked to bring the music of two conjoined twin sisters they had discovered on the internet to the world. There were two songs out on the internet by the mysterious pair for a long time, but a new song, " A Campaign of Shock and Awe", crept out today: you can hear it at http://www.myspace.com/evelynevelyn. Highly recommended, and not just because of the, y'know, family connections.

...

Right. I do not want to be disturbed tonight. Maddy and I will be beginning our New Year's catch-up by watching the first part of Doctor Who 'The End of Time'.
