Can't say I know much about the drug scene in Japan, except that most people don't do drugs because it's so freaking hard to get them, and because the penalties are tough (although 'shrooms are legal). For most people, the poison of choice is actually cigarettes (everybody smokes here which kinda sucks, 'cuz my clothes smell awful after every outing). Of course, Japan refuses to admit that it has any problems, so it seems to me that it'd be hard to figure out what drug problems it has.
Sorry I can't give you a better answer than that. If my friends or I were into drugs, I could help you out a little more. I think the most commonly imported drug is probably marijuana (sp?), but the chance of getting caught with it is SO not worth being able to smoke or pawn it. They lock you up in a Japanese prison forever, which, although less scary on the surface than an American prison, would probably suck a lot more (the regimentation, the frequent beatings, the accidental deaths). Actually, there was a prisoner who died a few years ago 'cuz a guard put some sort of water hose (the kind used for cleaning concrete) up his ass and basically shredded all his internal organs. So, yeah, prison is a good place to avoid here.
Maybe you should try asking Holly on this one. She seems interested in Japanese drug life.
wow that's interesting. Damn, i never even thought what a japanese prison would be like. I was curious about speed b/c people get so much done. I'll ask holly.
That reminds me of crazy Tom. He was really into pot in the states (he talked about it a lot when we would go out drinking), but he didn't dare bring any back. To compensate, he started chainsmoking (my guess is just smoking a lot more heavily than before), and drinking a fair amount. I'm sure he did a lot of that before in the states as well, but I bet he stepped up the volume.
-And, didn't we see signs for ecstacy cigarettes in America-mura in Osaka?
