Opening in My Brain

I can feel it. My brain is trying to open up again. It's like a flower pushing its petals up and out to let in the sun. It's a growing, moving thing behind my eyes. I'm going to make a breakthrough in my drawing style and technique, and the secret to it is going to be bugs.

I know that sounds weird, but they always say, "Write what you know," so why not draw what I know? I am constantly surrounded by bugs. Between the dust mites and the cockroaches and the centipedes and the mosquitoes and everything else, it's surprising I didn't notice it sooner. I saw a centipede crawling on a wall as I came home this afternoon and it hit me: draw bugs. So I'm going to do a spread with all kinds of weird bugs in the background. I'll probably draw a faerie in the middle (I've been keeping an eye on the "fairy drawing" LJ community, so that's in part where the inspiration for drawing a faerie came from). I sort of want it to be reminiscent of "The Mouldy" (one of my absolute favorite books as a child because the drawings are positively magical), but it should be obvious that I drew it. It's funny: I can look at other people's stuff and know exactly who drew it, but I can't tell what it is about my stuff that makes it look like it's mine. What's the "Abby factor" in my art? To me, all my drawings look pretty different, so I can't tell. What makes a Lord Leighton a Lord Leighton? (I would say, "What makes a Warhol a Warhol?" but that's obvious.) What makes a Shelton a Shelton (not that I can call my pieces "Sheltons" yet). I feel like my drawing style hasn't "set" yet. It's like when I went to that Higashiyama Kaii exhibit: I could see his style and technique evolve over time. It didn't really "set" until he was about 50 years old. Then you could tell it was his.

When will mine "set," I wonder?

You should post more of your drawings, Abbyabby.

(I know I don't comment a lot, but I read all your entries, btw!)

Where exactly are you in Japan? The fiance and I are going to spend 5 days in Tokyo, one day up Mt. Fuji, and 4 days in Kyoto... are you anywhere near there so that we could hang out? :)

I'm between Kobe and Osaka, so I could visit you guys when you're in Kyoto and show you around (I lived there for about a year).

It would be great to see you!

When will you be in Japan? (Have to plan things way ahead.)

Btw, thanx for reading my lj! ::feels the love:: I always read yours, too, even though I don't comment much.

Hello Abby-Abby!
I will tell you this...I can tell when you've drawn something because the person (when it's a girl...and i think u prob draw more girls then guys) looks like you. It's crazy! It's like they really are "your baby" if you know what I mean. So many characteristics of the people (how they look, how they stand, the emotion they convey) are just like yours. Maybe I just read too much into your work or maybe I've just known you too long (tho it is going to be much longer...MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA). In anycase I think your drawings are amazing. Can you send me that link for that website you made a long time ago w/ your art on it? Id really like to look at it again.
I LOVE YOU!!!! **kiss kiss**

Re: *~*LOVE*~*
You're so cute! ^_^ I'll be giving you a great big hug in less than 2 weeks!!! Eep!!! I'm so excited about coming home!!!

When viewing my journal, click on "user info" in the panel on the right-hand side. On that page, there should be a link for "Some of my older artwork" or something like that.

I hope to update it a LOT this summer (put up that scary pic I did last year, among other things).

You should make a website of your drawings, too! (Your style looks a lot like mine, I think.) Bring your art on vacation so I can look at in when we're in the car forever and ever.

I love you!!!
